Executive Directors & Founders:

  • Renita Certain | Co-Founder & Executive Director
  • William Certain | Co-Founder

William and Renita Certain are residents of Wyandanch and are small business owners who exemplify the perseverance and strong sense of community that are integral to the importance of creating a legacy. Their story is unique and inspirational, especially because it displays the hard work and dedication required to turn a life of trouble and suffering into one of happiness and prosperity.

Born in Brooklyn 1971, Renita Certain had a troubled childhood. In and out of juvenile detention with three other children by the age of nineteen, she was faced with figuring out how to survive as a young parent. She credits her work with Head Start as the catalyst that led her on a path towards a more prosperous Iife. While working, Renita attended college to study and pursue a career in child psychology. Graduating from CUNY Brooklyn in 1992, Renita became an avid community advocate. Influenced by her own upbringing, she has a unique perspective to offer assistance and guidance to those in need.

William Certain was born in 1964 in Wyandanch, New York. William is a proud graduate of Wyandanch Memorial High School and SUNY New Paltz. William was twelve when his father abandoned his family. This led to a rough childhood that left him incarcerated several times. At some point during this difficult journey, William decided to turn his life around and set out to make a difference in the lives of those reintegrating back into society after prison life.

Somewhere along these two individuals’ arduous journeys, they met and became best friends, supporting one another in times of incredible adversity. Eventually, the friendship turned into a deep love that was fortified by their shared mentality of giving back to the community. The Certains started their business, Spin the Yard, in 2015 to help families and communities in need. Drawing on a wealth of experience and desire to make a positive impact, Spin the Yard has become an exceptional resource for distressed families. Through important initiatives, such as the Certain ‘s reentry program to help individuals coming out of prison and their drug cleanup efforts, the Certain’s  are doing their part to help the underprivileged.

Charity is a vital aspect of Spin the Yards ‘s mission. Coordinating with local businesses and individuals, Spin the Yard was able to provide more than two thousand turkeys just this past Thanksgiving to impoverished families. They also organized a toy drive during Christmas to help over five hundred indigent families. These are just two of many examples of the direct impact the Certain’s have had on the community.

Through perseverance, a resolute work ethic, a genuine desire, and most importantly, an unparalleled friendship and partnership for life, the Certains have made a tremendous impact on other people’s lives, an impact that will undoubtedly expand and last forever.
